Avoid weak points and reduce costs: an FEA analysis with ISMB is worthwhile

Depending on the industry and intended use, your products must meet high requirements. FEA analysis enables the detailed assessment of the vibration, acoustic and thermal properties of components, machines, aggregates and systems at an early stage of development. Typical questions in this context are, for example:
  • Can the design withstand the required loads under the specified boundary conditions?
  • Are the expected vibration amplitudes below the limit values to be complied with?
  • Do the deformations of a construction remain within the permissible range?
  • What causes the observed strong vibrations of a machine and how can these be reduced?
  • How can the service life of a critical component be increased?
  • How can a component be designed in a more material- and cost-saving way with an undiminished service life?
  • How can the thermal power loss be dissipated as effectively as possible?
As an FEA service provider, we answer these and similar questions based on well-founded analyses and over 25 years of experience from a wide range of projects. For this purpose, we simulate the behavior of your product under typical and, if necessary, also under extreme loads and boundary conditions. Any weak points can thus be reliably identified so that appropriate optimization measures can be taken.

Validation ensures that the results of the simulation correspond precisely to reality. The sooner you incorporate the valuable findings of FEA simulation into your development and production processes, the sooner you will reach market and application readiness. From the simulation of the most diverse loads and influences, you receive decisive conclusions to make your product safer, more efficient and more durable. This is not only a competitive advantage, but also an important protection against impending warranty claims or claims for damages.

FEA simulation disciplines

The right method for every project

The term FEA simulation describes a variety of different analysis methods. While the principle of breaking down complex geometric structures into simple sub-areas always remains the same, the simulation methods used sometimes differ considerably depending on the task. The FEA methods offered by ISMB are briefly presented and explained below.

Static FEA analysis

In FEA static analyses, the behavior of components or assemblies under specified static and quasi-static loads is examined. These include, for example, external forces and moments that are constant over time or change only slowly, pressure loads, dead weight or thermal stresses.
The static FEA analysis includes the following sub-areas:

Strength analysis:
How robust are your products?

The component stresses of critical components are determined under the expected static, quasi-static, dynamic and thermal loads using FEA and evaluated based on industry-specific standards, such as the FKM guideline. The result is the degree of utilization, the tolerable number of load cycles and the expected service life. If necessary, design optimization measures are developed from the results of the FEA analysis in close coordination with the customer.

Deformation analysis:
Are your products resistant?

  • Do the deformations on a sealing surface remain so small even at maximum operating pressure that they can be compensated via the seal?
  • How great is the deflection of a support arm at maximum operating load and how can collisions with the feed system be avoided?
  • How far do the bearing blocks of an industrial gearbox tilt at maximum torque and how must the gearing be corrected to ensure the most even possible contact pattern?
  • These and similar questions can be answered with an FEA-based deformation analysis. We will be happy to support you.

Welding seam simulation FEA/Screw connection FEA:
How loadable are connections of components?

Couplings between two components are often critical areas in constructions. The exact knowledge of the load capacity of these couplings is essential to correctly evaluate the overall design. FEA simulations are just as decisive for weld seam simulations as they are for the testing of bolted joints. FEA analysis can be used to examine in detail how internal and external loads affect joints and to determine the maximum permissible load.

Dynamic FEA analysis/vibration analysis

We use different methods of vibration analysis to investigate dynamic systems. Systems can be set into vibration by changing internal and external loads or also by mechanisms. You can effectively counteract the resulting fatigue phenomena with findings from dynamic FEA analyses. Our vibration analyses are individually adapted to your products. This allows precise statements to be made about their vibration behavior and any weak points.

Rotor dynamics:
What forces act on fast rotating components?

Considerable forces act on rapidly rotating components, for example in turbomachines or centrifuges. Rotor dynamics describes the behavior of such components. Within the framework of dynamic FEA simulations, we check rotating components for their vibration properties and analyze the acting forces. Our engineering office for FEA simulations supports you either already in the conception phase or in the optimization of existing rotating machines.

Multi-body simulation:
How do parts of a system relate to each other?

With the help of multi-body simulation (MBS), systems are analyzed that consist of several bodies that are coupled together by kinematic joints. Our services in this area include the following points:
  • rigid-body dynamics
  • Dynamics of flexible multibody systems / elastic multibody systems
  • Mechanisms with transient or geometrically non-linear movements
The multi-body simulation provides detailed information about accelerations, acting forces and contact conditions of the individual components.

Operating vibrations:
What to do about unwanted vibrations?

The vibrations that occur during the operation of a machine can not only lead to disturbing noise or technical defects, but also pose a safety risk. In order to take the vibration behavior of machines, aggregates and systems into account as early as the design phase, it is therefore advisable to have the respective machine vibrations analyzed at an early stage.

For example, vibration analyses on machines or vibration analyses on motors can provide detailed information about their operating vibration behavior. Using FEA simulation, we make precise statements about linear and non-linear vibrations, such as squeaking disc brakes, and develop suitable solutions.

In addition to operational vibration analysis with FEA, we are also your partner for vibration measurements in Germany and worldwide.

Fatigue strength:
How resistant are machines to vibrations?

FEA analyses of the fatigue strength can be used to investigate the expected service life of components. This can provide information about the service life under normal conditions as well as the behavior in crashes and static and dynamic loads. Among other things, fatigue strength plays an important role in automotive engineering. Corresponding simulations convey precise information about, among other things, the fatigue strength, alternating strength and bending strength of the test specimens.

Have the fatigue strength evaluated with FEA analysis. Use the information gained in this way to significantly increase the service life of your components. In accordance with the specifications of the FKM guideline, we create static and dynamic strength verifications, strength verifications for welded joints and fatigue strength verifications for you, among other things.

FEA modal analysis:
How can resonance vibrations be avoided?

Unlike operational vibration analysis, which is concerned with the vibration behavior in a real operating condition, FEA modal analysis (FEA Modal Analysis) deals with the natural frequencies and natural modes of vibration of components or assemblies. These modal parameters represent global system properties, the knowledge of which can be used to optimize the vibration properties of your products. Modal analysis can be used to identify vibrations, on the basis of which your product can be designed in such a way that resonance vibrations are reduced or do not occur. For rotating components, the bending natural frequencies and torsion natural frequencies are of particular interest.
In addition to numerical modal analysis via FEA simulation, we also offer the performance of experimental modal analyses.

Acoustic simulations and acoustic measurements are indispensable in many areas of industry. Machine acoustics and vehicle acoustics, for example, have a great influence on the perceived overall quality of your products. Acoustic analyses are an effective means of counteracting unnecessary or excessive noise generation.

FEA acoustic analysis helps you to understand the sound emissions of your products and thus to control them in a targeted manner. We determine the sound radiation or the interaction of airborne sound and structure-borne sound via FEA simulation in a virtual environment, considering the fluid-structure couplings. If necessary, acoustic FEA analyses are supplemented by vibroacoustic measurements to obtain the most precise results possible.

Thermal analysis

Using FEA simulation, we carry out thermal simulations/thermal analyses which, in addition to the mechanical influences, also depict the effect of temperature loads in a natural way. Our thermal analyses help you to make precise statements about various parameters, such as temperature curves, temperature gradients, service life, cooling curves, heating curves or the general functionality of your components.

CFD simulation/flow simulation

Flow simulations or CFD analyses (CFD = Computational Fluid Dynamics) are used to investigate flow-carrying and flow-around components. We offer high-precision fluid simulations with freely definable variables, from flow velocity to viscosity (water, oils, air, etc.). Depending on your needs, we determine, among other things, the hydrodynamics, fluid dynamics as well as thermal dynamics of your components and thus effectively support you in optimizing your products.

FEA simulation explained

What does FEA mean?

FEA means "Finite Element Analysis" and describes numerical procedures for solving a variety of physical problems. Real, geometrically complex objects are mapped in virtual form and subjected to simulated influences. In this way, for example, strength and deformation analyses, vibration analyses and thermal analyses can be carried out. The name finite element analysis comes from the fact that objects are represented using a limited number of partial shapes, for example cuboids or tetrahedra. FEA models have been improved over time and are now used in product development, coupled field simulations and weather forecasts, among other things.
